The story reminds me of the power of power and how a

girl saved it, but the story itself is a little farfetched.

away. The map itself is very well laid out. The graphics and the music

are so unique and feel like you are in a different world, but also feel

too familiar.

since the music is so catchy.

Earlier this month, at the New York Times, James Surowiecki wrote a piece titled “Can Science Fiction Save Science?” That line in the title seemed a little heavy handed, so I spent a couple of hours trying to come up with a different title for it.

What I came up with was “Is Science Fiction Science?”

The answer to the title question is, I suspect, more complicated than Surowiecki seems to think. I have tried to think about the problem from two different viewpoints — a number of years ago, I wrote a lengthy memo to the Edge Foundation arguing that science fiction was a fine literature of ideas and that pure science was a poor substitute for it. Having said that, I’ve spent the past couple of years spending a good deal of my free time on this topic and I am well aware that the precise line between what’s literature and what’s science — and science fiction is clearly a science.

To me, science fiction is not, as Surowiecki put it, science, but neither is it a literary art-form. So it’s the wrong question to ask, but the wrong question to avoid asking either.

Another angle is the actual economics of science fiction. Science fiction, of course, is expensive. The core publishers of science fiction — Ace Books, for example — will not make a profit, which is largely due to the cost of having to pay a small army of production and warehousing staff to generate the product. Buying a science fiction novel is expensive.

If we ask the price question, then we have to ask where the money comes from to pay the bills — and we have to answer “Movies.” Science fiction is a movie-genre — a set of characters, events, and images on the page in a book is transformed into a visual medium that’s as coherent and as compelling as anything made by the movie business.

The interesting part of the economics of this is that science fiction costs about the same as a typical box-office movie. Indeed, they’re almost identical. Hollywood doesn’t seem to make any movies to make money; they’re made because they’re an expense. A science fiction author has a separate reason for writing a science fiction story, but the money-making comes from the movie industry.
