PSD files are text files that store layers. PSD files usually begin with _.psd_ (an abbreviation of Photoshop Document). A “display” layer of any visible image is called a “layer” and is often found on the first layer (i.e., the top layer) of the document. Other standard layers might include a background layer (such as a sky or grassy field), a text layer, a color layer, and so on. Layers can be created, saved, and moved around (filed) in the document.

A _grayscale_ image has shades of gray ranging from white to black. Grayscale images are often used for images with a single color tone. A _sepia tone_ image has a gray background with a continuous hue of brown. An _index tone_ image has a gray background with a continuous hue of yellow. A _daylight tone_ image has a gray background with a continuous hue of white or off-white. Sepia, index, and daylight tone images are all typically used for nature photography. For other subjects, you’ll want to choose between these and other tone options for image creation and editing.

Here are the basic steps to creating a layer in Photoshop:

1. Choose File New.

2. In the New Layer dialog box, if you’re not working with a background, click the Background drop-down menu and select the gray background or layer you wish to use.

3. If you’re working with a background, if your background is not in the same location as your file, type the location in the File Name box. (If the background is in the same location as the file, leave this field blank.) Choose a default name for your layer, as seen in the upper-right corner of Figure 3.7. A dialog box appears where you can change the name of the layer. Click OK.

4. A new layer appears in your image, and you’ll be ready to work. The layer name appears in the Layers panel so that you can

There are a wide range of features available to use in Photoshop Elements, including image cropping, editing, grouping images, creating collages and using third-party filters. The majority of users who use Photoshop Elements will edit their images using the tools available as part of the program. But there are tools available that can make Photoshop Elements almost equally powerful.

You may only need the basics of image editing but if you have a lot of raw image files, Photoshop Elements may suit you better. For example, its Live Photo and Live Image Editing tools let you shoot high-quality images and then create edits in real-time to quickly fix mistakes.

You can even use Photoshop Elements as a tool to convert PSD or PDF files into high-quality images or vice-versa.

Elements with a Light Table

Photoshop Elements is made up of a series of simple to use modules, which are often called ‘workspaces’. In Photoshop, you can open the interface for each module in a panel on the left-hand side. Elements makes it easy to keep all your tools within the interface by combining workspaces into one Light Table.

The Light Table is used to display tools as modules or workspaces, which you can open or close as required. Some modules will appear when you open Elements and these will be located within the Light Table. Others are always available and you can switch between them using the tabs at the top-left of the Light Table.

While Elements always has an Open Image menu, which is used to open images in the interface and the Light Table, it also has a number of useful and unique Photo Viewer modules that can be used to quickly browse images.

The Photo Viewer modules are shown in the preview window above the Light Table. You can download any number of modules and re-arrange them according to your own choice and preferences. All modules are auto-hidden when you close the Photo Viewer modules but you can easily re-arrange them by clicking on the ‘Show All’ button in the bottom of the window.

Unlike Photoshop, Elements does not include a dedicated module to edit images. Instead, the Image module is shown when you open a photo or an image. This module can be used to resize images, flip, crop, adjust tonal range and
