Conjunctival staining in hereditary gingival fibromatosis.
The present study was designed to examine the role of the blood-borne substances in the aetiopathogenesis of hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) and to compare the staining efficiency of the conjunctiva with the pulp. The study comprised thirty five patients with HGF, eighty two age-matched subjects with normal oral mucosa, and thirty nine age-matched patients with chronic renal failure. Stimulation of the tissues was performed by immersing the cornea in 0.1% and 0.01% solutions of the heparin. The degree of the staining was compared with the pulp staining after stimulating the oral mucosa with contact activating solution (CAS). The conjunctival staining did not differ significantly between the study and the control groups (p greater than 0.05). In the patients with HGF staining did not differ in the conjunctiva from that in the control group (p greater than 0.05). However, in comparison with the pulp staining, the conjunctival staining was lower and did not differ significantly between HGF and renal failure patients (p greater than 0.05). In HGF staining did not differ from CAS application in the teeth (p greater than 0.05). We observed no difference in conjunctival staining between HGF and control group subjects.
