SEATTLE — When a suspect is able to push a Seattle police officer over a railing, jump the fence and escape from a Seattle Police Department (SPD) team after a shooting, some worry the mission is already compromised.
“It was very troubling to us,” said SPD homicide detective Mike Sayre. “We have a shooting dead and a suspect in custody. You’ve got the home of the officer and the suspect getting into a car.”
Sayre says the tension rises when you get a call about a suspect fleeing with a cop.
“You get on the radio to other officers, but you don’t know if he’s still in the house. You don’t know if he’s got an officer under control or not,” said Sayre. “We had a couple calls where officers were wandering around the open neighborhood and the subject was not cornered yet.”
With no one watching the officer’s house, multiple officers get out of their cars and start searching for the suspect on foot, knowing that they may have to take out their guns in the process.
According to Seattle police, the suspect is a convicted felon with a lengthy criminal record who is tied to a gang that is connected to other shootings in the area.
The incident happened on September 23, 2018 when officers were chasing someone through the Cascade neighborhood in South Seattle.
Sayre says the suspect fired several shots at officers, killing one and injuring others before he ran out of ammunition and was caught by SPD.
“You can see, at the very beginning of the video, the suspect is firing at the officers,” Sayre said. “At the end of the video, the officers were going to put him in handcuffs.”
For the next 11 minutes, the suspect was able to push one of the officers, climb a fence and escape.
A K-9 unit arrived to help the officers find the suspect on East Upper Mary Street, but he was able to jump a fence and escape back into his own yard.
Officers scoured the neighborhood for the suspect as the Seattle Police Department (SPD) Crisis Negotiation Unit joined in the search. The suspect was found in a backyard and subdued with a Taser.

Gospel Workshop was a series of albums by the band 10cc.
